Composer William Brittelle’s Spiritual America, due May 3, is, at its heart, a bedroom recording—intimate, ruminative, highly personal—but one of decidedly monumental proportions. Here, Brittelle speaks with writer Michael Hill about Spiritual America, on which electric guitars and haunting electronics are as integral as orchestra and choir.

Brad Mehldau's Finding Gabriel will be released on Nonesuch on May 17, 2019. The album comprises nine thematically related songs by Mehldau and features performances by him on piano, synthesizers, percussion, Fender Rhodes, and vocals. Gabriel Kahane has brought music from his Nonesuch debut album, Book of Travelers, to Europe on tour. The tour begins with performances of the complete 8980: Book of Travelers work from which the album was drawn in Paris and Lyon this week, followed by concerts in London, Dublin, Glasgow, Genk, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin, and Nantes.

Joshua Redman Quartet’s new album, Come What May, is out now on Nonesuch Records. This is the first recording in almost two decades for this group of musicians: the saxophonist and his longtime friends and colleagues pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. "Nothing beats the cool confidence of a band who have spent years on the road,” says the four-star Times review. “It also helps that the seven Redman tunes here are so good ... Four men playing as one." The Quartet tours throughout this spring and summer.

Composer William Brittelle’s album Spiritual America is due May 3 on New Amsterdam / Nonesuch Records. Indie rock duo Wye Oak, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and the Metropolis Ensemble perform a genre-defying electro-acoustic song cycle written by Brittelle, plus a Wye Oak piece re-imagined by Brittelle. On the album, Brittelle works to reconcile his youth in a conservative Christian household with his adult life as an "agnostic Buddhist." The project began when he endured a family crisis and instinctively found himself praying to God. The 2019 Big Ears Festival gets under way today, and as usual, featured among the performers are several Nonesuch artists: Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi, Punch Brothers, Gabriel Kahane, and Mountain Man. Big Ears takes place at venues throughout downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, through Sunday.

Rhiannon Giddens's latest album, there is no Other, made with multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, is due May 3 on Nonesuch. Produced by Joe Henry and recorded over five days in Dublin, there is no Other is at once a condemnation of "othering" and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. Mountain Man's set at NPR Music's SXSW Tiny Desk Family Hour was among the "'Wow' Moments from SXSW 2019," said All Songs Considered. You can now watch the trio—Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, Molly Sarlé, Amelia Meath—perform three songs from the set: "AGT" from their album Magic Ship; Sarlé's "Human"; and "Grasses" by Daughter of Swords, Sauser-Monnig's new solo project. NPR's Stephen Thompson, in sharing this "softly joyful set," notes Mountain Man's "resplendent blend" and the "wonderful folk-pop songs" to come from Daughter of Swords.

Yola had a jam-packed week at SXSW, performing at showcases, radio sessions, and parties across Austin, including The Current Day Party, the 30-minute set from which you can watch here, and Andrew Bird's Live From the Great Room, their duet of "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" from which you can watch here as well. Yola's debut album, Walk Through Fire, is No. 1 on the UK Americana Album chart and is WFUV's New Dig. "Every so often, a musician emerges that really stops the world in its tracks. Yola," WFUV exclaims, "is one of those special talents."

Jeremy Denk was on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday to discuss his new album, c. 1300–c. 2000. "It's kind of an epic poem of human accomplishment and different ways of seeing the world through music," he says. "So as the centuries unfold, there's periods of impasse, you know, where how do you go on after Beethoven or how do you go on after Bach? What do you do next? How do you start fresh but still build on the past?" Denk performs at Wigmore Hall in London tonight and Saturday and can be heard on BBC Radio 3's Lunchtime Concert today and In Tune on Wednesday.
